I’m Coach David White — a 43-year-old teacher and varsity assistant girls’ coach in Tuscarawas County, Ohio (Claymont City School District). I teach Algebra during the day and coach in the evenings. Basketball has been part of my life since I was a kid shoveling a friend’s tiny court just to get shots up. I once set my high school’s single-game 3s record (7) — nothing legendary, but it taught me what matters: reps, standards, and loving the work.
I’m seeing the same pattern everywhere: less pickup, more schedules; lots of games, not enough skills. Some players only touch a ball during the season, others do AAU or train in a vacuum… and too often, it isn’t fun. When I arrived at my current school, I noticed a real skills gap. So this summer I tried something simple: small-group skill work and clear standards.
What happened? Players started coming back on their own.
A guard who was afraid to dribble began stringing moves together, getting downhill, and finishing on defenders.
A player who struggled at the rim suddenly couldn’t stop finishing.
The common thread: we kept it fun, competitive, and accountable.
The Short Corner is my way to give that experience to more families — starting with weekly skill challenges that any athlete can attempt.
Accountability over hype. Improvement you can repeat > a single highlight.
Make it fun again. If players enjoy it, they’ll do it more — that’s how skill grows.
Bring back pickup. Unscripted reps matter; I’ll build “play for fun” into challenges and future training.
Clear standards, verified results. One unedited video, simple rules, fair review.
Parents are partners. You’ll know what we’re doing, why, and how to help.
(Coaches who’ve influenced my thinking: Alex Sarama, Tony Miller, Phil Handy, Ganon Baker.)
Anyone can attempt the weekly challenge. Instructions come by email.
Parents submit the video link. We verify with simple, transparent standards.
Members appear on the full leaderboard, qualify for weekly/monthly prizes, and get accountability check-ins.
Every week you’ll also get one practical Parent Tip (plus Top-5 highlights).
Important: If your athlete is already consistent — doesn’t need check-ins or prizes — you never have to pay me. Compete for free, get the info, and enjoy the game.
Right now, challenges help athletes practice with a purpose. As this grows, I’ll offer small-group coaching to any players who want to learn from me. The goal never changes: more fun, more reps, more real skill.
